WATER CARNIVAL

AMATEUR SWIMMING THREE CLUBS COMPETE VISITORS FROM NEWMARKET A varied and entertaining programme of swimming, diving and novelty events was presented, at the inter-club carnival held under the jurisdiction of the Paeroa Amateur Swimming Club in the Paeroa Municipal Baths on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Visiting teams from Newmarket and Thames competed with Paeroa swimmers in the Saturday afternoon events. The weather then could not have been bettered and there was a crowd of nearly 300 people present to watch the scheduled programme which was put through expeditiously, the finals concluding at 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

Diving by Paeroa and visiting divers was one of the best exhibitions yet seen in Paeroa and it drew wellmerited applause from the large audience.

On Sunday the weather was showery but a novel programme of crazy dives, club relays, and an open 220 yards race was put on to entertain the Newmarket conyietitors and the few Paeroa spectators who were present.

The committee responsible for ths organisation of this carnival, which is the first of a series of annual events to be held in Paeroa, comprises the following: Messrs L. Edwards, L. Jones, G. Bain, H. Shaw, C: Blackwood, R. Jennings and C. Cramer. The ladies, who gave valuable assistance fti respect to the catering were: Mesdames H. Shaw, W. Crimmins, L. Edwards, L. Jones and C. Cramer. NEWMARKET VISITORS entertained by paeroa club Some 48 boys and girls from the Newmarket Swimming Club arrived in Paeroa on Saturday morning to compete in the inter-club carnival being staged by the Paeroa Amateur Swimming Club. Twenty-six of these competitors were billeted with members and supporters of the Paeroa club, while the remaining 22 were accommodated at the hotels. Aftei- the main events of the carnival had been held on Saturday, the visitors were entertained at a dance held in the Civic hall, Paeroa, where Mr L. Turnbull was M.C. and the Rhythm Troubadours supplied the music. There was a large crowd present and the evening was in all ways a success. A trip to Waihi beach had been arranged for Sunday morning and although the weather was unfavourable

the Newmarket cl ’ ' members enjoyed the ride and the swim in the suit. The novelty swimming events held at the Paeroa’ baths on Sunday afternoon marked the end of their visit and shortly before 4 p.m. the special bus, which has been hired to convey the visitors to their destination, left Paeroa for Auckland.
