WRONGLY POSTED
PAEROA LETTER WRITERS PATRIOTIC COLLECTION BOX The strange places in which people will post letters has from time to time been the subject of press reports but that people of Paeroa would make a mistake in this direction has never been thought likely. However, evidence, that quite a number of people had been using the Paeroa District Patriotic Committee’s collection box on the opposite side of the road to the Royal Mail Hotel in the main street of Paeroa was disclosed when the box was opened to be emptied prior to removal.
It was found that some twenty odd letters had been forced through the small opening, which was merely large enough for coins, and most of these letters must have laid there for quite a period as the box had not been cleared for some time.
iSome months ago it was reported that the box was on fire and neighbouring business people extinguished the blaze by pouring water into the box. An attempt was then made to open the box but it was found that the lock had rusted and resisted all efforts When the letters were removed from the box they showed signs of damage by water. The letters have been handed to the Paeroa Post Office for attention.
