CHANGE OF NAME
HAURAKI ELECTORATE PLAINS OPPOSITION OPINION OF COUNCILLORS A decision to oppose any suggestion to alter the name of the Hauraki electorate to Thames was made at the last meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. The chairman, Mr ,C. W. Parfitt, saidi that it had been suggested that the name of the Hauraki electorate which had absorbed the Thames electorate should be changed to Thames. He pointed* out that the district was Hauraki and the council should oppose any. change. Cr. D. G. McMilliam said he had some sympathy with Thames. Thames with all its faults was an old electorate an he regretted the loss of the name.
Cr. T. O’lCarroll said he supported Cr. McMillan. He had been, surprised at the loss of the name of Thames.
iCr. J. W. Neate supported.' Cr. McMillan. Thames was associated with Captain Cook and' he was sorry to lose such an old and respected name as Thames. He did not like seeing the name of Thames being eliminated.
Cr. J. F. Mayn said the council could not allow sentiment to enter into the matter. 'Hauraki was an electorate and it was in the interest of the council to see that the name for the electorate was Hauraki and not Thames. He opposed any suggestion to alter names.
It was agreed to oppose any suggestion to alter the name of the electorate from Hauraki to Thames.
