BAY POPULAR
GOOD HOLIDAY WEATHER
SOME MINOR ACCIDENTS
The visitors to Whitianga enjoyed perfect weather during the Christmas vacation until January 4 when a steady rain fell for a couple of days, without much winds, which was better for those under canvas.
The shops were very busy and the township seemed' transformed with so many people about. All dances, and pictures were well patronised. Quite a number of visitors return each year and many booked in again for the following Christmas holidays. Fishing from launches was more successful and good catches were made. A party of three ladies who were often out in a launch always landed a good haul, including hapuka and cod.
The popularity of Mercury Bay is established and this year visitors arrived from many parts of New Zealand.
Tennis, 'bowls and croquet were popular, also bathing and surf bathing at times.
Quite a few caravans made the trip over the hills.
Two campers were unfortunate with accidents. One man was badly 'burnt when a primus somehow exploded and his arm was burnt fairly badly. He
had to leave the Bay to get further medical treatment. The other camper tripped over a tent rope and spilt a saucepan of boiling fruit over himself. He was admittedto hospital for a few days, suffering from burns and shock. The camping grounds were fairly full but perhaps not quite as many as previous years owing to petrol restrictions
