TURUA FAREWELL

TWO SOLDIERS HONOURED PRESENTATIONS MADE BEST WISHES OF THE DISTRICT There was a large crowd in the Turua Hall on Tuesday evening last when a public farewell was tendered to Lance-Opl. D. Reid and Pte. A. Elvin. Apologies for absence were received from Mr H. H. Hicks, chaiiman of the Turua Patriotic Committee and Mr P. Murphy who were unable to be present. Mr J. E. Green in presenting the two men with a wallet from the residents of the district, said that the guests of honour were both wellknown young men, real Turua boys, and would join the lads who have already gone overseas and done so well. He hoped the boys would be in at the finish and see the job through. He wished them all good luck and a safe return. Thanks of Soldiers Mr Green also referred to two other soldier guests present, Pte. L. Fisher of Kerepeehi and Pte. S. Bowen of Kopuarahi. L./Cpl. Reid in replying thanked everyone for a very pleasant evening and for the presentation, saying he was quite used to speaking to tnem over the telephone (he was a former member of the staffs of the Turua and Ngatea Post Offices), but it was not so easy speaking in public. He said he hoped to see the same smiling faces to welcome him when he returned and brought the other boys back with him. (Loud applause). Pte. Elvin, in replying thanked everyone for a happy evening and all the good wishes and said it was lovely to see so many relatives and friends present. Mr J. Pye made an efficient M.C. The Monte Carlo was won by Miss N. Death and Mr Cameron. The Collegians of Thames played a selection of old-time and modern music for the dancing. A very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
