PAEROA HARRIERS

M. VUGLAR FIRST HOME PAIRS TEAM RACE HELD VLAHOVICH AND FOWLER WIN On Saturday last a good muster of harriers assembledi at the Paeroa Domain grandstand to contest the pairs teams race conducted by the Paeroa Harrier Club. The race was run over a strenuous 4i-miles course embracing road and country. From the word go the 14 contestants went away to a good start, the first to show up being M. Vuglar and T. Morrison followed by F. Sharp and J. Fowler. After the field had travelled one mile M. Vug]ar and T. Morrison were well out clear of Fowler and Sharp followed by R. Millar, M. Millar, P. Morrison, S. Wheeler and A. Currie.

With half the distance covered the runners were well strung out and Vuglar and Morriso n had increased their lead on the rest of the field. Following the leaders was J. Fowler with F. Sharp about 200 yards further back. At this stage R. Millar, who was running exceptionally well, ran up to Sharp. Then came M. Millar, P. Morrison and G. Vlahovich and S. Wheeler followed further back by A. Currie and A. Vosper, with R. Leach, L. Wheeler and M. Follas running in a bunch. A Hard-fought Finish With a mile to go, the evergreen Murray Vuglar, was putting all he-had into it in an effort to throw off T. Morrison who was running an 1 excellent race. It was here that Sharp made a forward move and almost drew level with J. Fowler, next came R. Millar, closely followed by M. Millar, who was beginning to tire, with G. Vlahovich and P. Morrison putting in a fast forward move. Further back came A. Currie, A. Vosper and S. Wheeler with L. Wheeler, M. Follas and R. Leach running together. It was a great contest oyer the last half-mile as Vuglar made a determined effort to draw clear. In the run to the judge M. Vuglar was hard pressed to get the decision from the plucky Morrison. A long way back came Fowler and Sharp followed by R. Millar, G. Vlahovich, P. Morrison and M. Millar with the rest of the runners coming in at different intervals. At the afternoon tea great interest was shown by the members as the teams were drawn. The successful team was J. Fowler and G. Vlahovich, with F. .Sharp and M. Millar second. Although T. Morrison was beaten into second place he ran an excellent race and should gain high honours in the Waikato Junior Cross-Country Championships to 'be held in Paeroa later in the season. Mention must be made of the fine run by George Vlahovich who was first of the Colts to' finish, his time of 27 minutes 39 seconds being very good for such a young harrier. The results were as follows: — . Teams race.—J. Fowler and G. Vlahovich, 52-19, 1; F. Sharp and M. Millar, 55-2, 2; T. Morrison and L. Wheeler, 55-52, 3; R. Millar and A. Vosper, 56-45, 4.
