DRAIN BOARD FINANCES GOOD RATE COLLECTION 94 PER CENT. PAID LAST YEAR That 94 per cent, of the total current rates, £4602 Ils 7d had been collected during the year ended March 31, 1943, was reported by the clerk, Mr J. E. Green, to Thursday’s meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board. The clerk reported also •

that 90 per cent, of the total arrears had also been collected.

The report stated that the rates for the year just ended had totalled £4970 7s 7d less the rebate £65 0s sd, leaving a total of £4905 7s 2d collectable. The amount collected was £4602 Ils 7d leaving £302 15s 7d outstanding at March 31, 1943.

Arrears at April 1, 1942, totalled £7BB 3s 9d of which £73 10s 8d was written off while £635 19s 6d was collected. Arrears outstanding at March 31, 1943, totalled £7B 13s 6d. The- total rates still outstanding total only £3Bl 9s 2d. Position of Areas The financial- statement also disclosed that in the four areas two, the Northern and Central South, had both expended more than the rates levied while the other*two areas, the Central North and the Southern, both had credit balances at the end of the year. Northern area.—Rates collectable including contributions • to works, etc., £832 12s 4d, expenditure £906 0s 4d, leaving a debit balance of £73 8s .od. Last year this, area had a debit balance of £l3B 18s sd. Central * North Area. —Rates collectable, including contributions to work, etc., £lO4l, expenditure £954 15s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £B6 5s 7d. Last year this area had a credit balance of £73 5s lid.

Central South Area. —Rates collectable, including contributions to work, £BB4 6s Bd, expenditure £979 is 2d, leaving a debit balance of £94 14s 6d. Last year this area had a debit balance of £62 0s Bd. Southern Area.—Rates collectable, including contributions to works, £706 18s sd, expenditure £448 0s Bd, leaving a credit balance of £2s'B 17s 9d. Last year this\area had a credit balance of £l9B 12s sd.

Drains Already Cleaned

Drains cleaned for the present season which were paid for' prior to .March 31, 1943, werqjas under:— Northern area, £lOB 13s Od; Central North area, £36 8s lid; Central South Area, £163 8s 8d; Southern area, £26 7s 9d.

The clerk in reviewing the position of the board stated that considering everything, including drain cleaning done before the close of the year, the board had never been in a sounder position for the last 10 or 12 years.

The rate collection was in a large way responsible for the position.
