BAY REHABILITATION FUND INSTITUTE OPEN MEETING An open meeting of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, April 8, in the Whitianga Public Hall apd proved to be a very, successful means of raising money for the Mercury Bay Rehabilitation Fund. The amount of £2l was raised and is to be used solely for the local Mrs Ralph, president, opened the meeting and extended thanks to the judges of the jam section, Mrs ■Griffins and Mrs Clayton. Mrs Ralph also tended thanks to Lieut. Brook and the Mounteds for allowing the Institute to use the Public Hall for their afternoon. Thanks were also expressed to the M.C., Mr Hemmings. After the minutes of the previous meeting were read and correspondence dealt with, the afternoon officially commenced. The produce stall was rapidly cleared of its goods and dainty baskets of home-made sweets were in popular demand. There were some splendid samples of home-grown vegetables which were also quickly sold: Upon a long table in the centre of the hall a very lovely display of flowers was arranged, and near this again was a table displaying the many jars of pickle, sauce, jams and preserves entered in the section.

After the judging had been completed and the produce stall cleared, several members of the Institute acted an amusing play, “Hot Pies.” Those in the cast included Miss Lyon, Mrs Armstrong, Mrs McKenzie, Mrs Russell, Msis Lee, Miss J. Smith and ■Mrs Greig, of Auckland. Following the play, six young ladies sang several numbers, “The Three Little Sisters,” “Rose O’Day” and “When ••They Sound the Last All Clear.” The soloist was Miss Mary .Sewell, and the pianist Mrs Ralph. Mrs Armstrong’s monologue, “The Good All Round General,” was received with much amusement and applause.

Afternoon tea was served to the many people present after which the secretary of the 'Patriotic Committee, .Mrs Russell, thanked everybody for coming along and making* the afternoon such a worthwhile success. "Winners of the competitions were: .Mrs Pooley, Mr Hemmings, Mrs Wilkins and Mr Trevor Brown, who generously donated his prize to the Rehabilitation Fund.
