FORTY YEARS AGO
THAMES VALLEY DAIRY
MAN THROWN FROM HORSE
NATIVE LAND COURT SITS
(From the Ohinemuri Gazette of September 28, 1902).
At a meeting of the directors of the Thames Valley Co-opera-tive Dairying Company held yesterday, no less than 510 shares were allotted. The ■ new shareholders are principally from the Waitoa district. Messrs Hall and Perkins have been appointed agents for the company for all districts outside of the Thames and Ohinemuri districts. A man named Tom Pennell had the misfortune to be thrown from his horse, through the latter stumbling on a rut in the road, while on his way from Karangahake to IPaeroa yesterday afternoon, breaking his leg by the fall. Pennell was taken to the Thames Hospital last night. The Native Land Court, after sitting here about three weeks adjourned “sine die.” Quite 200 cases were disposed of, the majority being the granting of succession orders to the estates of deceased persons. Some 30 cases of partition were concluded. There were only two cases of first investigation of title. It is probable that sittings of the Native Land Court may be superseded by the Native Council, as that body can, by and with the consent of the Chief Judge of the Native Land Court, exercise all the powers of the Native Land Court. The three Maori members ■for the Waikato-cum-Hauraki district have been elected, but the Government has not so far appointed the European 'President and the two other Natives they are empowered to nominate.
