SEQUEL IN POLICE COURT AUCKLAND TO PLAINS ELDERLY MAN CHARGED Charged with being idle and. disorderly and having insufficient means of support, William Carry, aged 62, appeared before Messrs D. Mackay and W. Boswell, Justices of the Peace, in the Thames Police Court on Thursday morning. Carry pleaded guilty to the charge. He had been arrested at Pipiroa on July 28. Constable W. Beasley, of Kerepeehi, prosecuting, stated that accused had walked, from Auckland and had arrived at Pipiroa live days ago. He had gone to a resident of the district and asked for food and shelter. The resident had taken pity on him and supplied his wants. The resident had 'then rung the police, stating that Carry had been with him four days and that he was complaining of illness. The former had thought it better to put the matter in the hands of the police.

“I visited the place concerned and found that the only thing for me to do was to arrest Carry on this charge,” said Constable (Beasley.

Not Fit to Travel

“The accused is tramping the roads from one end to the other all of the time,” continued the constable, “and he is not in a fit state to ibe travelling. He is one of those unfortunates. He is getting on in years and has nobody to look after him. He. should' be sent to some place where he would receive proper medical attention.”

Mr Mackay: You have no home whatsoever ? Acbused: No.

Carry had not been receiving his Social (Security benefit, it was stated. He had thought that, because he had not paid his levies for a number of yearsi, he was not entitled to the benefit.

The Court passed, a sentence of six weeks’ imprisonment in Auckland, where accused would receive proper medical attention. The Court recommended that he receive his .Social' Security benefit on his release so that he would have sufficient means of support.
