OBITUARY

THE REV. T. H. LYON EARLY PIONEER PASSES The death has occurred of the Rev. Thomas Harwood Lyon, of Whitianga, Mercury Bay, at the age of 79. Born in England, he came with his mother to New Zealand'at the age of four. He was ordained in the then Primitive Methodist Ministry, in 1885, subsequently becoming secretary and president.

Owing to ill-health, he was compelled to retire from the ministry in 1912 and then went farmnig at Mercury Bay. He took a keen interest in local affairs, being secretary of the Mercury Bay Dairy Company for ten years, and for a long period w T as connected with the Hospital Board and other foodies in the district. A promoter of the local bowling club, he later became its president.

He also gave four acres of land in the centre-of the township for use as a park and sports ground. Mr Lyon is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son. There are four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
