COROMANDEL HOSPITAL

Sir, —In answer to your column “Get Away With It” in edition dated June 17, 1942, I desire to answer under the heading “No One Will Get Away With It.” When I was employed as cook at the Coromandel Hospital I had two interviews with the hospital board secretary, Mr Neighbour. One over the phone and one personal. I also had a .personal interview with the chairman of the board, Mr Brenan and Mr Brooks, the Coromandel representative of the board was present. Mi’ Neighbour informed me that the cost of running the - Coromandel Hospital was twice that of the Waihi Hospital and that there were twice as many patients at the Waahi Hospital as there were at the Coromandel Hospital. In view of that circumstance, he, Mr Neighbour, would be grateful if I would do my utmost to reduce the waste and incidently the expenditure and to economise to the best of my ability. That I made considerable saving was obvious to all who had been in the hospital before my arrival. I gave to the board the fullest consideration I was capable of giving under the circumstances.

When I found that my considerations were resented by the staff heads and that I was accused of favouring certain members of the staff with special breakfasts, when the disgusting pimping about the hospital became too unbearable I tendered my resignation four weeks before leaving, giving my reason for so doing.

Is this your sense of fairness, members of the hospital board, that you make a statement through the press that “the staff heads do not want her back.” In common decency I want to know through the press why that statement was made and what it implied. Why is a specific statement not made and an opportunity given to me to defend, myself. Too many individual interpretations can be made from the press statement and I do not feel at all disposed to let the matter rest there without that ex-planation.-—I am, etc., MYRTLE LYNNE. Coromandel, June 29, 1942.
