BOOKS FOR SOLDIERS
APPEAL TO PAEROA LIBRARY WAR LIBRARY SERVICE NEEDS “As president of the association, I am glad to commend to you and to your library authority the following appeal from the director for a grant of books to the War Library Service, from the stocks of your library,” stated a letter from the president of the New Zealand Library Association, Mr 'Joseph Norrie, to the monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough CounTn. The letter continued: —
“The council of the association has endorsed the appeal and I am confident that it will succeed. Libraries should welcome this opportunity of mobilising a portion of their “fit” stock to engage in the war effort of this country.
“The principle of granting books from our stocks without a reasonable chance of their return may seem strange, but I would point out that the books will go where our men need them and total war demands total effort.”
The Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, explained that Paeroa’s quota would be about 40.
The matter was referred to the Library Committee.
