DEBUTANTES.

Very little has been heard this year of the influx of • wealthy Americans to London, most of the women clamouring to present their daughters at Court, states the London corresopndent of the “Taranaki News.” The list of presentees from the United States is, indeed, smaller this year than it has been for a long time. But one charming little American debutante made her curtesy to King George and Queen Mary at the first Court in the person of Miss Virginia Dawes, the only child of the American Ambassador in London, and his shy and very retiring wife. Looking very sweet and attractive in a simple white and silver frock, she was taken to Court by her mother, who was dressed in pearl white satin. Pretty and unaffected as so many of the debutants are this season, it is noticeable that it is in her second dr third season that the girl of to-day •makes the greatest impression upon her set. In spite of all that is said about the sophistication of young people, most debutantes are very shy, rather self-conscious, and not at all anxious to be in the social limelight. It takes at least a year for that at-x mosphere of /reserve to be dispelled. A girl who is just beginning to “feel her feet,” and is proving one cf the most vivacious and entertaining members of the social circle, is Miss Pa- . mela Wellesley,' Lady Fitzgerald's grand-daughter, who came out about eighteen months ago. She has dark, flashing eyes, a piquant/little face, and is fascinating'to watch because she is so interested in everything, and so entirely natural. To all appearances she is enjoying London life to the full, and making no secret of it either. ,
