WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
AHAUURA VAJ.i.r.r Airs It. Bradley presided over the monthly meeting of the ArahurValley Institute on Wednesday last at the One Mile Ball, with a mil complement of members. The meeting opened with the Institute song, after which the president welcomed Kokatahi and koiterangi members who had been invited to attend. Two new members were enrolled and the motto for the month was “Of all troubles great and small, the greatest are those that don’t happen at all.”
A varied programme was carried out. An instrumental duet was played by Mesdamos Hareourt and Holler and a lucky spot waltz was won by Airs S. Havill and Aliss Boddington. A display of flowers made from wood fibre was given by Airs W. Havill, of Koitorangi. This was a very choice display. An exhibition of handcrafts was arranged on the stage, and in the points competition, “best frock costing not more than ss” Alt's A. Aluir 1 ; Mesdames ißradlcy and Edwards 2; and Airs Hewlett 4.
A debate, “Should Husbands Help in the Home?” was led off by Airs Holler, assisted by Airs Finch for the affirmative and Alesdames Palgleish and Aluir, negative. The result was for the affirmative by long odds, which caused much merriment.
In a pigtail competition, Aliss Iloddington came Ist, as she also did in “a .Soap Picnic” competition.
A solo, “! Passed by Your Window” was rendered by All's Hareourt, accompanied by Airs Holler. An encore wan responded to by a parody on the above solo, embodying Institute membeis and curriculum. Alcsdanms H. Finch and R. Palgleish were delegated to attend the Council meeting to be held in October at Hokitika. It was resolved that the Women’s Institute contribute towards the cosL of the piano which has been recently acquired, proving a most agreeable and necessary adjunct to the Hall.
Community singing was carried out, everyone joining in the pastime. Afternon tea was dispensed after which Alesdames S. Havill and Cron, on behalf of their respective institutes, returned thanks for the happy afternoon spent and Hospitality shown, and extending an invitation for Arahura members to attend their meetings any time.
The singing of “Aold bang Syne” lyuught a most enjoyable afternoon to a close.
