Evidence that a birch forest .gfety, and was .burnt thousands of years hgo,' on the site of Ashburton, wa s revealed by excavations for a building. After going eight feet through solid Hav, con-? tractors encountered a layer of blade! soil in which was a number of small logs excellently preserved, also a small pocket of charred wood.
