BOROUGH COUNCIL

LAST EVENING’S MEETING The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening when theye were present the Mayor (-Mr G- A. Perry), and Crs A. Thompson, H. T. Parry, E. L. Park. .1. King, T- W. Duff, A. IL. Elcock, ETeicheltnanu and H. L. Michel. The British Cancer Campaign Society, wrote tendering thanks for donation at £2 2s-—Received.

The N-Z. Rcrigcrating Co., advised 34 sheep were delivered into Hokitika during June. Mr F. J. Bade, asked that part of Tudor Street, leading to his property be cleared of growth.—Approved.

The Minister of Internal Affairs notified that Wednesday, August 7, i s Arbor Day, and asking for co-operation in recognition of the national importance of tree planting—-Received. The Board’s Representative, No 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, advised the contractor for the sealing of the highway had now been released from his contract, and the Highway is now returned to the control of the Council for maintenance purposes.

Robert Ford and Co. Ltd,, asked the Council to asphalt a chain of footpath along the brewery frontage in - Davie. St.—The Council decided to contribute €6 toward the cost.

The Westland Hospital Board, advised that the -Rev H. J. W. Knights had tendered his resignation as a borough representative on Westland Hospital Board, to take effect from July 25, the Council to appoint another representative—The question was deferred until the next meeting. The Hospital Board wrote asking for the second instalment of levy pending approval of estimates. —Approved. The financial statement showed receipts totalled £B7B, and expenditure £496. The district fund account showed a debit of £925. Accounts amounting to £202 were passed for payment. The following stock was slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs during June: —Heifers 10, bullocks 80, cows 20,, sheep 226, pigs 9, calves 54, and lambs 70. Condemned 1. cow, 2 bullocks, 2 sheep. Receipts £74, as against £6O for June last year.

The foreman (Mr F. W. Chesterman), reported : A pipe was renewed-in the. water main in Hall St. between Stafford and Hampden Sts, and one renewed in Fitzherbcrt St (between Spencer and Tudor Sts. Burst -pipes were repaired in Stafford St. Wokl St, and -Sewell St. A water service was repaired in RoUoston St, and one in Sewell St. A bad burst took place on .June 19 in Hampden St. The IxJ i n ch pipes were extended in Davie St at Kortegasts’, and a blowoff tap put on. A valve was put on the pressure pipe at the abattoirs. New washers were put on a fire plug in (Revel 1 St. A bole was filled in at the corner of -Rolleston and Gibson Quay, and a block in Sale -St drain was located and cleaned out, and one at the corner of Hampden and Fitzh e i‘bert Sts. A fortnight was spent cleaning and gravelling Weld St footpath with screened gravel, (between Bealy and Brittan St s on the south side, and Hall St on the west side. The footpath between Spencer and Tudor Sts was cleaned ready to gravel. The average depth oT water in f.Tfe reservoir or the month was 3ft 6in.
