PIG MARKETING

ASSOCIATION’S OPERATIONS. A meeting was held at Koiterangi on Thursday evening to consider the second vear’s operations of the New Zea-land'Co-operative Pig Marketing Association in the Kokatahi and Arahura districts. Mr M. Waihiee presided. The chairman said the 1934-35 season showed a definite increase over the present season, the number of pigs handled was 1575 as against 1110 for the previous year, an increase of 40 per cent. The percentage of finest selected in 1933-34 was 25, while.in 193435 it was 30, the New Zealand, average being from 18 to 20, indicating fanners (were definitely going in foi improved types. On this particular class a premium of Jcl per lb. extra would he paid.

The percentage of overweight pigs showed a definite decline, showing producers were realising the necessity for meeting marketing requirements, namely, medium weight carcases ot from 120 to 150 lbs., without excess fat. Advance payments for the year had been on a very satisfactory basis, compared with export parity prices, and farmers were antjlepating a substantial final bonus on the year’s supply. The chairman said the success of the year’s operations ,in the district was due to their agent (Mr H. A. Boddington).

Mem hers freely expressed the opinion the advent of co-operative pig marketing had altered the whole outlook regarding rearing} and marketing. It seemed 'reasonable /to 'hope the time was not far distant when the whole industry would he handled in this manner.
