PALESTINE’S RE-AFFORESTATION (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright;. LONDON, July 10. Including £l6-000 already collected, there has been £21,000 now realised for re-afforestation in Palestine. Of this, £SOOO was subscribed by guests representing London Jewry at a Guildhall dinner in aid of the King George the Fifth Jubilee Forest Fund. Already there is a Jewish National Fund, which has acquired one hundred thousand acres in Palestine, on which there are settled thirty thousand Jews. This is apart from the regular migration of Jews to Palestine.
Lord Melchett presided at the dinner. lie aroused cheers} when he described Palestine as “the potential Singapore of the Near East” which would be protected not by English battalions, but by three million grateful Jews.
Sir Herbert Samuel urged the repopulation of Palestine as a sacred duty .
The King acknowledged messages of loyalty from the guests at the dinner, who cheered an announcement that His Alajostv had given the first tree from Windsor Park for plantation by the British High Commissioner of Palestine in the autumn.
