WELLINGTON, December 10

On Sunday morning, the eruption ol Ngauruhoe which commenced on Thursday night and had continued since then, reached a climax. Great bursts of steam and smoke shot from the orater. Mr Cobbe, manager of Chateau Tongariio, stated this morning, that on e magnificent, hut. terrifying hurst yesterday reached an estimated height of ten thousand feet. The violence of Die eruption rocked the ground at the Chateau This big burst was by far greater and higher than anything recorded in the 1926 eruption, according to residents of Raetilii, .who observed both phenomena. Volcanic ash from the mountain spread over a wide area of country and. was noted as far away as sixteen miles from the scene of the eruption. Last Wednesday, one of the Chateau guides visited the crater a t Ngauruhoe and although all wa s quiet on tne mountain at the tim^.' he noticed a good deal of the lip of the crater had fallen in, partially the vent. The guide again visited the top of the mountain on Saturday- morning, --and observed a new smaller crater ..formed in the centre of 'fife* old one. He just had time to photograph it and run for his life, when an explosion occurred. Smoke was still ascending this morning, ’ although eruptions have calmed down.
