FORMER DEAN OF NELSON

Rev. Charles Askew was found dead oil the railway at Beaconsfield. He was Dean of Nelson, New Zealand, ‘in 192353.

The death has occurred of Julian Wvlie, theatrical producer.

The death took place at the Grey Hospital yesterday morning of .Matthew Hodgson, aged . 1 years. Deceased, who was a native of England and a. miner by occupation, came to New Zealand only eight years ago, and wa s a resident of R-unlsnga. He is survived bv his wife, lour sons, two daughters and a brother.

The death occurred at the Grey Hospital last evening of Michael Chrliiil, aged 80 years. The deceased, who had resided in the Nelson Creek district lor a number of years, had been an inmate of the Hospital for the past live weeks. He has no known relatives in New Zealand.

The death occurred lyiestekday at Christchurch, of Professor C- F. Salmond, who retired in Mhy last from the chair of Philosophy at Canterbury College, latter thirty-three years’ service. Hi s retirement was necessitated by ill-health, which had compelled his withdrawal from work in June last year, hut ibis sudden death was cpiite unexpected.

The death occurred suddenly at her residence, Totara Flat, yesterday morning, of an old and highly respected re.si.dent of the district, Mrs Catherine Meara, a native of County Tipperary, Ireland, aged 73 years. Deceased } who came to New Zealand, with her parents, as a child resided for some time at Invercargill before coming to the West Coast,. She resided in the early days at Greenstone, Hokitika and Ahaura, hut had been connected with fanning at Totara Flat for tlie past fifty years. Her husband, the late Michael Meara, to whom she was married at Ahaura, predeceased her twelve years ago. She is survived by two sons, William (Totara Flat), and Cornelius (Auckland), and four daughters, Airs W. Holley (Hokitika), Miss Gertrude Meara (Totara Flat), Sister M. Paul (New Plymouth Convent), and Sister M. Augustine (Nelson).
