! AVitli tlio warm weather there lias I been a largo amount of soa bathing all over New Zealand, and at Hokitika each day there are large numbers indulging in a dip in the sea, but every I care should be taken, when the sea is I calm as it has been of late, from the possibility of shark danger. There has I been no record of the grey nurse shark, the most ferocious of the man. | eaters, having been captured jn New | Zealand waters. Some of the species j likely to be encountered are the whaler, a large type, of a light slaty colour, the Southern Tone, frequentlv caught on schnapper lines, the comparatively harmless thresher, and the basking shark, or reremni, which is large and sluggish, - feeding on small fish and marine organisms. Sharks of a more dangerous kind have been reported in northern waters and although there is always a danger of them making their way inshore they generally prefer the safety of the deeper waters.

Some amusement eras caused when Jive dogs competing in the fourth heat of the maiden race at the Auckland Greyhound Speed Olub’g tin-hare meeting at Car-law I’ark on Saturday afternoon refused to be deceived into believing that the hare making off in front of them was a' real one. *N.o fewer than five attempts- were made to st-rt the rice, but oil each occasion the dogs ran about 100 yards, i and then lost al‘ interest ill the decoy and began barking and playing on the- field. On the 'fifth occasion an older dog was started with them with the object of leading them, but this made no difference to the competitors. After this plan had failed, the only course Jeff to the officials was to disqualify all the d°gs entered for the heat.
