OBITUARY

CHRISTCHURCH, May 3. The death occurred yesterday afternoon of Mr P. E. Bean following a sudj den illness which occurred while he was | playing tennis. Mr Bean who had passled his seventy-third birthday two days 'ago, was a retired railway servant, I whose last appointment was that (of Stationmastcr at Lyttlcton. He was a very enthusiastic tennis player, and his skill and steadiness enabled him to play regularly, in company with much younger men. Mr Bean Lore his years very He was extremely popular in tennis and golf circles in both of which he was a regular club player.* At every tennis tournament in Christchurch he was a familiar figure usually taking charge of the umpiring though he did not often umpire himself. He was the most remarkable of tennis (veterans of Christchurch and when he played 'in a veterans’ exhibition match at Wilding Park recently with J. H. Kirk, E. J. Ross and E. Wilding, he was much the most active member of the party.

The death took place at' Wellington early last month of Mrs Tlios, Hearn. Deceased was 71 years of ago and resided in this district in the earlier days. A husband, one daughter and three sons are left.
