The Minister of Customs (Mr Fenton) will represent Australia at the Five Power Naval Conference, NJS.AV. BASIC 'WAGE. SYDNEY, Dec. 5. The State Government’s basic wage decision was announced by the Premier in the Assembly. Air Bavin said it was proposed to adopt the standard of an average family of a man, wife and one child. He anticipated the basic wage would be fixed at £4 3s 6d, with an allowance of five shillings for each child after the first. ARREST ON MURDER CHARGE;; SYDNEY, Dec, 5. ’ The police yesterday arrested James Devine, on a charge of shooting Bernard Dalton, cabled on December 3rd. Devine was recently acquitted of the murder of Gunman Gaffney, who was shot during a gang raid at Devin’s home at Maroubra. . ASSEMBLY SCENES. OPPOSITION LEADER ORDERED OUT. SYDNEY, Dec. 5. Riotous scenes continue in the Legislative, Assembly. Pandemonium reigned last night when Air Lang (Leader of , the Opposition) refused to apologise for a remark to Air Thorby (Minister of Agriculture) and was forced to leave the Chamber. A FIRE. MELBOURNE, Dec. 4. A fire at the Ham and Bacon Factory of J. C. Hutton, at Preston, destroyed a large packing room, and also the contents. The loss is estimated at £50,000.
SUVA’S MAYOR. (Received this dav at 1.30 p.mA SUVA, December 5. ' Henry Marks was re-elected Mayor of Suva for the fiftlv term. VESSEL A TOTAL LOSS. SUVA, December 5. The Norwich City is reported a total loss. Five whites and six Arabs were drowned when the vessel struck. There are twenty-one still on the island. Three rescued are aboard the Trongate. Enormous seas are hampering rescue work. A rocket line was sent ashore, also water and provisions. The captain, officers, and engineer of the wrecked vessel are safe.
