CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS

J'. AND T. DEPARTMENT PROPOSAL. by Tur.EOP u*n— muss assn., coi-vnionT. WELLINGTON. Nov. 17. The present intention of the Telegraph Department is to observe December 26 as ’Xmas Day ami the 27th as boxing Day. This will mean that on the Monday only a small number of Telegraph Offices will be open at all, and even those, merely from 5 to 5.30 p.m. On the Tuesday, ordinary liolidav hours will be observed.

As there are a large number of race meetings, and at least one very important athletic fixture and other functions that are set down for the 23th, it was obviously expected tliat this would he celebrated as Roxing Day. The Telegraph Department’s action will clash with these fixtures and unless an alteration is made by one or the other, it will bo impossible for newspapers to publish the reports that will be expected. The Department also proposes to observe Monday. January 2nd. as New Year’s Day and there again only holiday hours will Pc followed and will greatly interfere with the publication of races, etc.
