DIRECT TELEPHONE LINES,
As an outcome of a request by the Eltham Chamber of Commerce for a direct telephone line to New Plymouth, Mr O. Hawken, M.P., has mentioned,
in the course of conversation, that a new system •of lines is. being arranged, viz., a direct line round the mountain via Opunake, which will carry most of the service, and an extra line from Hawera to' New Plymouth, which will be available for Hawera and Eltham only. It is intended and expected that tMs extra line will give Eltham the required service. ELTHAM PUBLIC LIBEAEY. The monthly meeting of the" library and reading room committee was held on Monday evening in the Municipal Buildings, when there were present: Messrs Bridger (chairman), J. Sheat, Eev. Orange, Mrs Syme, and E. Gibbings (secretary). An apology was reI ceiveel from Mrs 0. Hawken.
The secretary reported that thirtythree new books and three volumes of the New Zealand Official History of the Great War had been added to the library during the month. The sub-committee intimated that a library picture benefit entertainment had been arranged with the Borough Council, when the first episode of the new serial "With Stanley in Africa" will be screened.
The chairman reported that the shelving had been altered during the month in keeping with the wishes of the committee, and the new arrangement was proving most satisfactory. lhe selection committee met /at the closs of the meeting and selected1 seventeen, new books from the latest lists
