PATEA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) . The official opening of the local bowling green is set down for Wednesday, 25th. inst. J> It is always pleasant to be able to' record promotion, but more particuiar- , iy so it the person promoted is from ! one s own town. To-day Mr. Albert Larcombe, son Qf Mr. O. A. Larcombe of this town, left here fo r Auckland' f a-fu Utf to m V> vY here he has accepted i r j ir, c Permission of the New Zealand Government) a position as a school teacher under the Administration. Mr .Larcombe was born in Patea some 26 years ago. Gaining a scholarship at the Patea school, he went to the Teachers framing College at Wellington for three years. After leaving the .training cohege Mr. Larcombe was appointed ; second master at Okaiawa, and from there went to Kakatahi. About six years ago he accepted the. headmaster- ; ship of the Auroa public school, and during his term has seen the school grow from one requiring one teacher to that of requiring three teachers. Be- ] ttore leaving Auroa, the opportunity was ] taken by the residents of the town and ; { district of showing Mir. Larcombe the i esteem in which he was held, and at j a social for this purpose he was pre- ( sented with a very handsome waJlet stuffed with bank notes, and on the fol- • lowing day the children presented their | late teacher with a very fine travelling j oag. Mr. Larcombe was- always popular with the school children —and deservedly so—for he took a very keen in- { terest in the outdoor sports of the j youngsters, and the Auroa school on j two occasions had the champion cricket team of that district, an achievement due in no small measure to the coach- ' ing received from Mr. Larcombe. We • I -all wish Mr. and Mrs. La-Tcombe the i best of health and good luck. ; On Labour Day, if "fine, a team from f tho Hawera Cricket Club is visiting i i Patea to try conclusions against a team | i picked from the local club. Play comj menees at 10.30 a.m. On Saturday' j next the Carlyle cricket team play j I Waverley A at Patea, and Patea plays ! Waverley B at Waverley.
