THE "CRUCIFIXION."

There was a fairly large congregation

at St. Mary's Church on Wednesday

evening, when Sir John Stainer's impressive Passion music was sung by the choir and Messrs W. L. Hay (tenor) and R. Laurie Cooper (bass),, of New ; Plymouth. Both gentlemen were in fine

voice and sang their respective parts with due appreciation and with a reverent expression of the suffering and pain of the awful scene on Calvary. i The difficult duet for tenor and bass j was splendidly rendered, the voices of I the principals blending perfectly. Mr. G. Liddington sang with appreciation the recitative leading up to the quartet, i which was taken unaccompanied by Mrs. Duff ill (soprano), Mrs. Sunderland (contralto), Mr. Page (tenor), and Mr. • Liddington (bass). The pitch and blend !of the four voices were very good, the ; only little fault being a slight tendency Sto quicken the time in one or two j places. The work of the choir as a I whole was good, but closer regard to shading would have improved their performance considerably. The organist was Mr. Page, and the conductor Mr. G.-A. Burgess. A collection was taken uo in aid of the choir fund.
