THE PARK. S

COMMITTEE'S RECOMMENDATIONS.

The Park and Reserves Committee re- ; commended at the last meeting of the Council that a tence suitable for re--1 moval be erected between the cricket and football grounds. A visit, the 'report stated, had been made to the Park, and as a result it was recommended that a telegram be sent to Ur Lewis asking him to attend, if possible, the next ■ Council meeting, so that the position in regard to the arrangements with the I Fernery Committee could be explained, i aiso that the work of making entrances Ito the fernery be left in the hands of j tho engineer. Further recommendations i were that the spouting in the grand- ■ stand be renewed, and that grandstand ;in the lake be removed to the borough j yards j that the ticket office at the bowlI ing green be shitted to the south siae jof the gate, and that the small gate at j the bowling green entrance be altered so that perambulators could pass I through. , The Mayor said he was sorry more j councillors had not attended when the | inspection of the Park was made. Omv i four had been present. "With regard to , the platform, had he known that there j would be no further concerts ,either in aid of the Park or the Turuturu-Mokai , funds, he would have moved in the di- ' rection of having the platform shifted i much earlier, for its unsightHneda i marred veiy pleasant surroundings. ; With regard to the fernery, he was ol the opinion that if Gr Lewis was going away so much the Council would have to step in, but unfortunately no one but Ur Lewis knew the outside committee's scheme. If ferns were going to be planted this season they would soon have to get to work. As for the fence io Terred to in the report, they all felt ! that what was wanted was a folding fence that could be put up or taken i away as desired. j Cr Reid asked if the fence was ne- ! cessary. \ The Mayor: Yes. if we are going to allow sheep in. Cr Stevens said the concert commit/tee had been disappointed at not having been able to do anything further in the way of raising funds, but ; other functions, tat which they had ! given their services, had been so numerous that no suitable opportunity I was afforded for doing anything for . the Park. | Cr Cameron referred to the gorse growing on Turuturu-Mokai, and the Mayor reported that the committee wa» , attending to that. It was left in the hands oflfce acfjjigchairman of the Reserves Committee to arrange for th«* erection of the folding fence. After some discussion it was decided, on the motion of Cr Grant, that the concert stand be dismantled and stored at the Park under the supervision of Cr Stevens. The report was adopted.
