MATAPU

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

TE ROTI-OPUNAKE RAILWAY. Steady progress is being maintained at this end. The big bridge at Te Roti is receiving the finishing touches, and the completion of this structure will allow of the line being pushed ahead. The work at the bridge over the Kiapuni stream is also well in hand, and a start is being made with the traffic bridge on the Skeefc Road.

THE SCHOOL. The report sent in by a correspondent re the householders' meeting held recently, while coTrect as to the results of the meeting, omitted the more important part, the result of the year's work and the splendid work done by members of the old committee. The chairman (Mr. Guy), in the report of the paßt year's working, torched on what had been done in the interests of the school and what was necessary for the future. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £30 4s. As regards the septic tank, Mr.' Guy -explained that the present system was over thirty years old and a menace to the health of the pupils, and moreover was con- ' demned by the Education Board. The only alternative was the erection of a more up-to-date system, but as this work would be classed as special, the expenditure of sckool funds would not be allowed. Therefore a meeting of residents was called and the erection of the septic tank system was decided on and an appeal to residents for the necessary funds. A generous response had been made. Over £60 had been collect, ed, and this, carrying a double subsidy., would allow of an up-to-date system being put in that would *ast for all time. The estimated cost of the work is in the vicinity of £120.

The loss to the school committee of two of its most valuable members, Messrs A. Guy and Jas. O'Sullivan, is generally regretted. Their efforts in promoting the welfare of the school were well known, and it would be .difficult to find two members who took such interest in all matters pertaining to school work.
