FLOODS IN SOUTHLAND.

INVERCARGILL, Aug. 2. During the past few days a southwesterly of moderate temperature has been raging, accompanied by heavy ram resulting in the melting of snow in the hills. In the back country the rivers have risen considerably and have overflowed their banks at places. The Waipahi flooded suddenly on Thursday night, the water overflowing the township and finding its way into some of the. dwellings. The Mataura had risen 18in. to-day, but has a long way to go before a flood at Gore is to be apprehended.

The Mimihau was in flood on Thursday night, the water entering Wyndham. The Oreti is bank-high at Lumsden, and is over the road at Wallacetown. The weather is apparently improving, and serious floods are not anticipated.
