THE DEFENDER BURNED.
WELLINGTON, Aug. 2. About 1 o'clock the Defender, which took _fire,at. the wharf and was towed out into the harbor, drifted on to the rocks at the north end of Somes Island, where she is burning furiously. At half-past 1 there was. a big explosion.
