Mr. James Nicol, who arrived in Wellington in. 1840, and who has resided in the Wairarapa for over seventy years, died on Saturday at ths age of 85. He married, in 1562, a daughter of the late Mr. John Smith, iron-founder, of Wellington.

Lieutenant James Robert Dennistoun, whose death in Central Germairy from wounds is report?d, was born at Peel Forest, Canterbury., and educated at Wanganui and Malvern Colleges. He was a member of Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition in 1910-11 and was awarded the King's Antarctic medal, and that of the Royal Geographical Society. He made the ascent- of many enow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps^ amongst them several peaks never before ascended. He also climbed, alone, Mitr.3 Peak, in Milford Sound, which up to that time had been considered inaccessable.

Lieutenant-Colonel S. R. Davidson, a New Zealander, and an old bo.y of kelson College^ who has reachad high rank in. the Indian army and is now second in command of the 47th Sikhs, hr.,> been promoted Brigadier-General. Colonel Davidson joined the Indian Stall Corps .in Somaliland, and was mentioned in "dispatches early in the present war.

Lieut. R. G. Sellar, at last advices, Avas acting as instructor at an artillery training school, and having, he said, a A*ery interesting time. He gives a striking account of the fine work being done in the training of cadets, who have •at the conclusion of the course to sit for examination. The many friends of Mr and Mrs Ernest Nalder will be sorry to learn that they are bidding farewell to Hawera on Thursday next, Mr Nalder having joined the staff of Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co.. Napier. Mr Nalder came to Hawera in 1904 to join Mr Gillies in the business of auctioneering, and they were associated in this enterprise for ten years, when they sold out to the Farmers' Co-op. Organisation Society, Ltd. During his twelve years' residence in Hawera, Mr Nalder associated himself with sport of all descriptions; he was a prominent yorker in racing circles, he organised the Trotting Club, and was mainly responsible for placing it in its present prosperous and popular position. He *lso took a very keen interest in hoxing, football, cricket, and golf, occupying <responii'Mp. and prominent positions in the conduct and management of all these games. Throughout- South Taranaki he was for a number of years one of the most prominent stock auctioneers, and he will he much missed by many a farmer. With their many friends in South Taranaki, we wish Mr and Mrs Nalder a happy and pleasant sojourn in sunny Hawke's Bay.
