MAGNIFICENT FRENCH PLUCK

It is officially stated that a French brigade reached Altkirch at nightfall. r.-'sie place was defended by strong f-arthworks, which the French immediately assaulted with magnificent pluck. One infantry regiment by a furious charge carried the entrenchments with bayonets and the Germans fled, even abandoning a wocond line of v. orks, which they might have held.
Atlkirch rang with shouts of joy when the French entered. Old men who had seen 3870 (tho Franco-Prus-p.inn war) embraced the soldiers.
French dragoons followed the flyi 12 Germans towards Walthean, Tagol-f-;a?)tm and Illfurts, inflicting heavy 1 )ss. The French lasses were not excessive considering the result.
Mulhausen was unfortified and its inking occupied less than an hour, the or/alry dashing through at full gallop in pursuit of the German reargxiard, v/uo set fire to many buildings, especially provision shops and fodder stores.
Trie Germans are now ;it Neubriesach, which Is permanently fortified and commands the Rhine Valley.
Other accounts say that the French lavonsters dashed forward like madEwa to tho very mouths of the guns and shovelled the Germans out of the trenches.
