CLIFTON (3) v. STRATFORD (0). Saturdays game was spoiled by the arouna being very, wet and: muddy, lne heavy ram made handling the ball well nigh impossible, play being confined mostly to the forwards. The fttrattord team received their first beating on Saturday, when Clifton defeated them by the. narroSv margin of three points.. Stratford won the toss, Cam setting the ball in motion against the wind for Clifton. Pl ay returned to half-way. Yellow forwards pressed and the Red backs, owim* to the ball being so slippery, failed to return. Several- anxious moments for the Red supporters followed. Stratford returned, and gave the Yellow backers some anxious moments Play swept up and down the field, half-time being called with no score on either side. On resuming the Yellows' forwards again attacked strongly A good rush, in which Reid, Dewar and bmith showed up Tvell, ended in Yellows defending. The Clifton forwards, led by Cam. a 2 ain returned, Cain getting over near the posts. Abbott failed to convert. Clifton 3, Stratford U. Spurred on by this reverse the Ked forwards attacked strongly for the rest of the ppe. Their '-efforts were in vain, for time was called with the score unaltered. Mr Spurdle had charge of the whistle.
