RAILWAY MEN'S VIEWS.
The Victorian railway men are displeased at the decision of the Premiers' Conference to invite the Commonwealth to take over immigration matters.
Mr Hyatt, secretary of the Amalgamated Railway Unions, states that the railway men are surprised that a proposal of the kind should emanate from Mr Holman. Before the immigration, policy is extended provision should be made for all local workmen. The States had hitherto shown a remarkable tendency to displace railway men in favor of immigrants. This policy tended to lower wages. Trades-unionists had no objection to necessary immigration, but wanted no flooding of the labor market to the detriment of Australian workers
The Railway Department has placed orders outside Newport for the construction of 800 goods trucks.
