FANCY UNIFORMS. MINISTER DROPS PREFERENCE FOR PANTS.

MELBOURNE. Jan. 27

Senator Pearce, Minister i'cr Defence, delivered judgment on the vexed m;estion of kitts for Highland regiments.

"My ruling sometime back," he said, "was that kilts may be worn, but the department cannot supply them. We have a characteristic uniform, which is very suitable for the Australian forces. As military service is to be universal and comuplsory there is .no need for fancy .uniform* to attract volunteers."
