THEOLOGICAL CONTROVERSY.

GIBSON'-SMITE'S BOOK. Tpbess association.: AVELLINGTON, August 11. The Rev. Gibson-Smith's book on the Atonement was referred to to-day at the regular meeting of the Wellington Presbytery, of which the author is Moderator. Rev. Kennedy Elliott gave notice to move an ovorture of considerable length setting forth that all Christendom holds and teaches that Christ by His obedience satisfied Divine justice; that this Presbyterian Church holds and proclaims this same doctrine as set forth in our standards (passages cited from Westminster Confession and larger and shorter catechisms) ; that every minister and elder solemnly undertakes constantly to maintain and defend' the same doctrine; that, as a minister of the church has published a book in which he emphatically, and with scorn, denies the truth of the said doctrine, this Presbytery resolves to overture the General Assembly of the church indicated to meet at Dunedin on November 10 "for the upholding of the testimony of the, church for the stability of ihe Saints in their faith and for the maintenance of the church's position before the world. It is highly expedient to reaffirm and anew declare this church's adherence to the doctrine of her standards in such terms as to the wisdom of the General Assembly may seem meet." The date Of the discussion of the overture .was not settled. "
