AN UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCE.

[press association.] »WHANGAREI, August 11. The steamer Kapanui ran aground on a sand bank off Mangawai. A big sea was; on at the timey and the vessel stucfelbr two hours bumping so alarmingly that lifebelts were served out. In the- midst of the .confusion a lamp burst and caused a fire, which was only subdued with difficulty .owing to the high wind. Boats were got ready and some passengers stripped to swim, but there was no panic. She got off eventually, apparently unharmedi
