THE WATER METER.

INSTALLATION POSTPONED.

At Wednesday night's meeting of the Hawera Borough Council correspondence was read from several extra-borough consumers of water.

Air A. Hunter asked for information, .pointing out that it seemed to be proposed to make Hunter's Estate subject to a double minimum. It was decided to treat two meters as one supply.

. Gillies and Nalder wrote that as they obtained no benefit from the water in their * yards (which was there for the convenience of thirsty stock) they did not feel inclined to instal a meter. They already paid an excessive rate. The firm asked that the service be discontinued.

The Town Clerk said the auctioneers bad informed him that the Council had passed a .resolution to the effect that they could have the water free of charge in connection with their troughs./

j The- Mayor said the fact of the Counc il having previously granted water free ' of chairge was no reason why they should ' continue doing so. The reason the auc- ' ticmeers had bean, asked to put the meter .'in was because it was considered they were washing water. If it could be I shown thatXthere was no waste the • Council would probably further consider the matter. If it was the unanimous wish of the ," councillors the Cauijeil could rescind the motion an the books -without notice. To test the feeling of the Council, Cr Foy moved, That the particular motion on the books with reference to Nolan, J Tonks and Co. and Gillies and Nalder 1 be rescinded, Cr Hurrell seconded. All the councillors voted for the motion save the \ Mayor and Cr Campßell. Not being unanimous- the motion remained. Messrs G. Gunn, Adam Hamnah, and A. N. Foy notified that the supply might be out off, as they would not instal ' metere. \ I Mr C. W. Alien objected to the mini1 mum, as much of the water he used wai i irom tanks. I Mr F. E. Moore objecfed to the rate [Is 3d as too high, and questioned the reliability of meters. The Mayor stated lie had since found j that the Council hnd acted wrongly in issuing notices to extraordinary water 1 I vacxs ' to connect with the meter for ' 1 the reason thnt last year it had been resolved that the extraordinary consumers be charged a certain rate. That arrangement was to remain for three years. That term would not expire until 1909, therefore the notification that outside users should connect nt the end of the 1907-8 financial year was (not in order.

It was Timlerstood that the Town Clerk was to notify those consumers* who hnd already received no>tire to rmnect with, the meter of the mistake made.
