HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was held on Wednesday»night; present— The Mayor (Mr B. C. Robbins), Crs Morrissey, Foy, Boyd, Whittington, Campbell, Pacey, Bru1 jiette, Wilkinson and. Hurrell. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr G. Trevithick, Secretary of the Hawera Public Library, drew attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the gas lamp in front of the building. He j said the committee hoped that' the : Council could see their way to have the j ■electric light placed there instead.— ; Referred to the Lighting Committee, j Dr Sloan, who has sold his practice and is about to leave the. Mr Budge, Hawera County Clerk, intimated that the next move in con- j section with the Hawera-Kaupokonm tram proposals will be the preparation of planß and cross-sections showing tne mature of the work proposed to be undertaken. The cost would be £170, and he -asked if the Council were prepared to bear its proportion of the cost on the basis of the -On the j motion of the Mayor and Crs Foy it tos agreed to bear a proportion. Conroy, Secretary of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce, wrote ; suggesting the Council should j frame a by-law in connection with persons loitering at street corners, etc.— Letter to be forwarded to the Borough Solicitor. . „ , - The Secretary of the Chamber .or ; Commerce advised that the expenses incurred in connection with the visit of the Minister for Lands was £4 14s, and asked the assistance of the Council , an defraying same.— Half the amount to be paid. . > Nl G. H. Gibson, Hawera, wrote asking *fte Council to refund £2 16s . 9d, • amount of water rate over-paid — Amount to be refunded. E Malone wrote requesting the Council for a reduction of the amount of her rates, £13 9s 2d— Referred to finance Committee. ■ - H W Climie submitted a plan (on iehalf of Mr G. Syme) of subdivision of section 24, Hawera, showing proposed new road.— The plan was ap•proved. , I R. Burke, collector for the Trades- . men's Association, aske__the Council ■for a subscription to the nightwatchman's i,vmd. — On Cr Brunette's motion, sedonded by Cr Pacey, it was re--solved'to contribute 3s per month. Mr H\ H. Halliwell wrote on behalf of Mr /R. . J. Hughes asking that his -account of. £6 18s 6d might be favor- • -ably considered.' -It seemed (stated the letter) that the work to the fire-bell was done with the Council's consent, and. that Mr Hughes spent "a good deal of time and money in making the bell a success. TT/he claim was entirely for money paid away by him for materials, labor, blacksmithing, ccc. The, claim could not be considered exorbitant. — *Cr Foy moved, That the account "be paid. — Cr Hurrell seconded.; — The "Mayor moved, as an amendment, That Mr Hughes be offered £3 10s without prejudice. The amendment lapsed for lack of a seconder, and the motion was carried. ' H. W. Climie wrote that the' cost of the proposed new. cemetery, plans, etc., would be £110. The Council would have to prqvide all pegs or iron pins required, which would cost from £20 to £25 additional. — The Mayor said- the """work would have to be done- sooner or later. — Held over till next meeting. Hawera Swimming Club wrote handing over water shute and electric light -to the Council. The club also applied for £5 0s 6d towards cost of installation of the light as agreed upon.— Cr Toy moved^ That the amount be paid: — Cr Wilkinson seconded; carried. ,Francis McGuire complained of the 'Engineer not having attended to his •drainage as requested.— The Engineer said there was a blockage caused by a iault in the fall of the pipe. This was not the fault of the borough. He advised Mr McGuire to get a plumber td attend to" the. matter.— lt was resolved that the matter be left with the "Works Committee with power to act. THE TOWN CLERK'S SALARY. . The Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Elliott) .applied for an increase of his salary. - The Mayor said(the Clerk's salary of £225 was little enough, and he thought . it should be increased. - Cr Brunette agreed, and moved, That the salary be increased to £250. Cr Boyd seconded. , Cr Foy said that he thought as the ■matter was important it should, receive further consideration. He ' accordingly ' moved, That the matter be referred to the Finance" Committee. Cr Campbell . seconded the amend■ment, which was carried. BAND COMMITTEE. The committee met on. March 30, when the following resolution was carTied: That the band's application |or custody of instruments be acceded to; "band's committee to be responsible to Council for all instruments and pro•perty; Borough Band Committee re-

serving the right to inspect all pro* perty on any band practice night; members of band to parade annually at time and place to be appointed by Borough Band Committee, and all instruments, uniforms and property to be then produced for the purpose of checking same. — Adopted. The Council rose a few minuted after 11.30 o'clock.
