A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.

y BIG CONFLAGRATION IN ' MATAURA. IFBEBB ASBOCIATIOIM.; GORE, April 6. A disastrous fire occurred at Mataura at two o'clock this morning. It was discovered in the hardware premises of J. T. J. Gait, in the centre of the town. It spread to Alex. Gait (butcher), Welham Bros, (bakers), and Watson (tinsmith) on the one side, and s^on the other to a small building occupied by Mr McKay (dentist) and Dr Hay, where 1 it was stopped by a brick wall. The premises and nearly all the contents were destroyed. . The stocks of Domigan (chemist), Greenwood (stationer), Hardy (tobacconist)', Adams (cyclist), Smith and Jeffery (watchmakers), and the Southland Prapery Co. were removed in safety, but the spread was stopped through the exertions of a bucket brigade. The insurances available are: — J. T. Gait, 200 on the premises and £100 on the stock in the North British; Alex. Gait's plant, £100 in the Victoria office; Welham Bros.' stock and plant, £100 in the South British and £100 in the Victoria.
