EXHIBITION NOTES.

(By Telegraph. — Special Service.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 19. The international fire brigades' demonstration, which is on a larger scale than , has ever previously beten seen (in the colony, opened in the Exhibition spores ground this afternoon. Unfortunately the [ day was drab and chilly, and threatened Tain at any moment. On this! account the attendance was not so large as wpuld : doubtless have been the case under more ■ smiling weather conditions. Three different competitions were commenced at once, and. as thiere were large entries for each, ' and the men had been training hard up to the last moment, the public was able to enjoy interesting exhibitions of quickness ' and activity m lire brigade work. In the evening a magnificent illuminated water display was given at the side of Victoria Lake. More than a dozen lofty waterspouts were kept in motion by engines drawn up sound the side of the Take, and the display was played upon by colored Bights, which, gave a strangely picturesque effect, while fireworks wore sent up arid rockets fired above the lake, both from its side and from a temporary anchorage which, had been formed in the centre. There was a. veary large citoWl oi spectators, and the display arousled much, en- ) thusiasm. The competitions will be conI tinned at nine o'clock to-morrow morning, and in the evening a sensational act, ! "Fighting the Flames." will" be given on the sports ground in combination with, a display of London fireworks. ( Greao attention is being given by farmers to the fine collection of seeds exhibited in the Agricultural Department's ! court by a Dunedin firm, and the collection of cleanings from New Zealand ground seeds shown by the- same firm. Another collection of very ohfoice seeds, grown in 1 Hawke's Bay, is also attracting much, notice. The serious side of the Exhibi- ! tion'is being much availed' ©f> as it draws J towards its close. Visitors to the Art Galj lery are even more •numenoua tihan they i have been before, and the high, average attendance at tike orchestral concerts and organ recitals has never been so consistently maintained. Mr Webb, the Nelson organist, will give recitals in the concert hall ,pn Thursday and -Friday nerk and j it is possible that arrangements; may be ' macfe for another organ concert to- be gives by Mr Gregaon, the London organist, whin has roadp such, a fayo?ab}e impression. The papers, sent, in in^e^typewriting, shorthand, and commercial, correspondence sections of the Home Indiistries competitions vvili all be placed;' on' view in the Home Industries portion of the Exhibition. The committee in charge of this section intend also po make an exhibit of homemade quilts and counterpanes in the nor- ' tihern gallery, which .hitherto has not been very largely occupied. - 1 It is expected that the next detachment ,of Wanganui Maoris will arrive in; the pa ' ! either at the end of thie present week or i . the beginning of next week. The ppi dancer^ from the .Tqiratina Msjori 'Qirl&' School, I who/made a^preriou? visit, to the Exhibition, are expected to retuirn 'for a week about the same tune. ' i •Three gentlemen of high standing m art j cardes— Sydney ' L. Thompson, asrtist; Headman Smith, director of the Christchurch School of Arts, and Mr Hemus, photographer— have agreed to act as judges of the physical development , competitions. 1 to be held in "Wonderland" on, Friday next in conjunction with the hunt for the buried treasure. Large entries have been ' received for the competitions.

THE SUCCESSFUL MILKER. A short trial of a few months at the end of a season is no guide as to the reliability of any milking machine. Two full seasons is the shortest period in which to determine if the. machines have any in jurious effect- in the oows or their yield. Many previous macHines appeared to milk satisfactorily fo- the first eeasbn but • until the- "LAWRENCE-KENNEDY-GIL LIES" was prover every machine re- , suited in disaster during the second, but i most frequently during the first season. l The "L.K.G" can show five years practical use, and before any other machine* can stand level, even on paper, & must give a five years' guarantee against loss of yield or injury to the coww.
