i - HEAVY RAINFALL IN WELLINGTON. , JPBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, March 19. The rainfall yesterday was 2.33 inches., . the heaviest since July 1905. BIG SLIPS ON NAPIER LINE. ' EKETAHUNA, March 19. ] During the last three, days 7.41 inches i of rain fell. Last night the "wild cat" train from Masterton to Woodville was about four and , a half miles below Eketahuna when a slip foil on the tmcks. The engine was de- ! tached, and started for Eketahuna to report, but met another large glip. Another ■ slip falling behind it separated it from the rest of the. train. There are now three , slips on the line, the largest estimated at . 1000 tons. Railway traffic is suspended, as trains are unable to connect. Every available man i& at work clearing the lino. Tram service is considered impossible before evening.. PALMERSTON WATER SERVICE. CUT OFF. PALMERSTON N., March 19. The Manawatu was in heavy flood this : morning. Considerable' damage, was dfone : to the, Hokowhjtur protective works, the main being broken- in .two places. -At the Tiritea head works- the small bridges were carried away, and the town supply was out off. A service is now supplied from • a small reservoir. It is expected that the damage will be repaired in a few days. ■ Slight damage is reported to properties along the river near Palmerston. After three • days of heavy rain the weather has cleared up, and this morning splendid conditions prevailed at Hawera.
