OKAIAWA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.")

Th» tea and 'Concert in aid of the Union Church, held on Wednesday last, was completely spoiled by the wretched weather which prevailed. Tea was on the tables from 5.30 until 7.30, when the hall was cJeaired and a short but enjoyable concert held. Solos were given by Mrs Ward and Messrs Bear, Negus (encored), and Sargent (encored), duets by Mrs Sloan and Miss MicLeod, and Messrs Joll and CMvers, and two quartettes by Mesdames Ward' and Sloan, Miss McLeod, and Messrs Bear and Sargent. Both quartettes were very well rendered, and were deservedly encored, xuiie accompaniments Wiere well played by Mies Young, who also opened the concert with a pianoforte solo. I understand it is the intention of the church committee *o hold this function some ti»ie during the summer months in the future, when there will ba a better chance of having better weather.

The contractors er* -"king slow prot gross with the bridge 0..^. the Kapuni on Skeet road, .and it will probably be som© months before the bridge wll be opened for traffic. The new ford over the river

has been much out vp 5 and is now olmosD impassable for wheel traffic.

On Saturday next our seniors meet Patea on the local ground to decide the southern championship, when no doubt there will, be va large attendance. If our boys aip to be successful they will need to play a much better game tnan they did at Opunake on Saturday last. The Opunake ground was certainly in a most shocking state, the ball was a mass of slime, and if a man went down in a scrum he was in danger of being smothered in the mud; but these drawbacks were no excuse for the exhibition given by the visiting tieam,, which was decidedly their poorest this season. Our seniors have won every match on their own ground so far this season, and we hope the record will not be broken on Saturday next.

A party of looal football enthusiasts -who proceeded to Opunake in a brake and four on Saturday last got stuck in a mud hole on the Nonnanby road when on their return journey. Settlers living on county roads who .growl about the state of their roads should take a trip along this road to Manaia, and, should *hey survive the trip, they would probably give the County Council a little more credit than they do at present
