Malone be allowed) a remission of half rates for 1905-06, i.e. £5 7s lOd, and " that tenders be called for 12 months' supply of hardware and fuel, 50 sacks of oats and 75 of chaff. Cr Morrissey moved and Or Brunette eseonded the adoption of the report. Cr Sargeson moved an amendment, That Mrs Malone pay half .the rates and that the balance be charged to the estate. Cr Pacey seconded. Others found it as difficult, or more so, as Mrs Malone, to pay the rates. Cr Wilson agreed. Cr Morrissey said the Finance Committee had gone into the matter fully, and he thought their recommendation should be adopted. The Mayor said tlie property had been oveT-valued. All these case 6 should be considered on their merits. The amendment was lost. Cr Wilson then moved, That raites be reduced to £7 10s (from £10 15s). Cr Sargeson seconded. A division was taken and the amendment lost. For : Cxs Pacey, Sargent, a-nd Wilson; against: The Mayor, Crs Goodson, Brunette, and Morrissey. Cr Wilson moved another amendment, That the rates be reduced by £1 only. He did it to call special attention to what the Council proposed doing. Cr Pacey seconded. It was shameful the way money was being "chucked away" by the Council and he objected to it strongly. Another division was taken on this amendment (which was also lost), the voting being the same as previously. The adoption of the report was then carried. WORKS. The following were recommendations from the Works Committee: — (I) That necessary papering at surfaceman's cottage 'lie done j (2) that Mr Hawke's offer to act as caretaker at intake in return for the use of the cottage there -c accepted ; (3) that Mr Gebbie be notified that the arrangement whereby he has the use of the intake cottage is cancelled and that the outstanding rent of- same be sued for; (4) That Mr Nolan be informed that the [ Council is not prepared to quote for one i extraordinary water supply service to Ndlaaitown, But is willing to consider a scheme for a, supply to the residents generally, and *hat a committee of tHe residents be invifed to meet the Council to consider the matter. The Mayor moved the adoption of the report. Cr Momssey thought that if the resideats of Nolantown did not move in the matter, Mr Nolan's application should be considered. The report was adopted. BOROUGH LEASES. An application for remission on a borough lease was received from Mrs Brett,' on behalf of heir husband. The Mayor said this must be another of those unfortunate cases of people overestimating what they could pay for rent. He had heard that others were just wait ing for the Council to make some move and then they would try and throw up their leases too. He moved, That the matter be referred to the Reserves Committee. Cr Wilson seconded. Cr Pacey: People violate thir contracts with the Council and do it with impunity I do not say that is the case in this matter but we should not give a lease in future without having proper sureties. The motion was carried.
