HAWERA v. COUNTRY.

HAEWRA v. COUNTRY.

A considerable amount of interest was taken in this match, which took place on Bayly Park on St. Patrick's Day. Both teams were about the best that could have been selected. The country team were confident of making a close contest, but results proved that they were outclassed in every department. The weather conditions were well nigh perfect, and the ground and wicket in capital order. The wicket had been laid diagonally across the ground, and quite altered the general view. It was remarked that the ground had never appeared to better advantage this season,

Glasgow captained the visitors and McCarthy the local team. Winning the toss, the latter elected to bat, and sent in Pratt and Campbell," who faced the bowling of Cole and Glasgow. Both batsmen opened quietly, and for the first few overs runs came slowly. Then they got the measure of the bowling, and began to punish it. Despite two changes of bowling they rattled up the runs in great sivle, and at the luncheon adournment 87 was on the board. On resuming Pratt added a few to his score, and then tried to pull a straight ball to leg. with the result thai he was clean bowled. . 94^-1— 60. He had played attractive cricket, and scored much faster than his partner. E. Cole filled the vacancy, and began to hit at once. He scored a four, two threes, two twos, and only, one single, and then in trying to put Moore out of the ground he unfortunately mishit, and was caught at cover by Gorringe. 121 — 2—16.2 — 16. McCarthy began quietly, and then opening his shoulders put one clear over the fence and two to tho far boundary. Campbell was pegging away, and the score mounted steadily. L. Cole came on, and the scorin<r steadied down. In his second over he got McCarthy with a good ball that kept low. 163-3—24. 11. Elliott, the next man, in, played carefully, and after nine runs more were scored L. Cole got in a trimmer to Campbell and scattered his stumps. 172—4—59. The retiring batsman played a capital innings, showing patient defence, and laying on the wood to great effect when the chance offered, rlaggett was next, and at once began to hit. The score mounted rapidly, despite several changes of bowling. Haggett with a nice leg stroke brought up 200 amidst applause. Both batsmen were scoring at almost the same rate. With the score at 223 Elliott called his partner and started down the pitch. Haggett hesitated, and then told him to go back, Elliott made a good attempt, but was unable to recover his ground, and was run out. It was an unfortunate misunderstanding, but there was really no room for a run. 223—5—26. A'Court laid on the wood with effoct, making some pretty square cuts, while Haggett was piling on the runs In good style. They carried the score to 270, when the' latter in trying a short run lost his wicket. Butts, who was next, began well, getting three threes and a four in succession. The batsmen had the bowling tied up, and before the partnership was dissolved 300 had been passed. Seven runs later A'Court wxs bowled by a yorker from Davis. 307 — 7 •'- 20. Liddle came and went, mishiturg Maclagan and being caught behind the wicket. 308—8—0. O'Callaghan got two successive balls away to leg, and quickly put on 8, when the innings was declared closed with the score at 324. HAWERA. Pratt, b W. Cole 60 Campbell, li L. Cole 59 E.
