NEW ZEALAND v. AUSTRALIA.

f>*lM ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, March 17. The weather was fine for the second day's proceedings of the test .match, and the wicket played easy though on the slow side during the earlier stages of the game. The attendance, which stood at 500 when a start was made, at noon increased to -3000. After lunch Trumper and Hill gave a magnificent exhibition of batting, the New Zealand bowlers being treated to unmerciful punishment. The partnership produced 259 runs, of which 100 was compiled in 35 minutes and 150 in 56 minutes. Boundaries were as plentiful as blackberries, and the crowd were roused to enthusiasm at the superb batting of this redoubtable pair. Trumper was batting 80 minutes for his runs, which included four 6's and twenty 4's. Hill was 85 minutes in compiling his runs, which included ten 4's and five 6's. Hill hit Ollivier to the tune of 26 in one over, three being clean over the ropes. Trumper was missed at 33, otherwise his display was chanceless, while Hill had two lives when he had not reached 27, and again at 114. Duff, who batted briskly for his contribution, was somewhat lucky in reaching 51. He gave an easy chance after scoring a single, and should have been run out six runs later. Gehrs played a steady and sound innings. Noble and Armstrong should have been sent pavilionwards early in their innings, easy returns to the bowler being declined. The catching of the New Zealanders was atrocious. Had only half the catches given bern accepted, the Australian score would not have reached 250. Callaway bowled the steadiest and Upham had a measure of bad luck, three catches being missed off him. Boxshall d'd good work behind the wickets, and his stumping of Hill was a smart piece of work. Owing to the bad light play was suspended 25 minutes prior to the time fixed for the drawing of stumps. Scores were as follows : — i AUSTRALIA.—FirBt* Innings.
