THE LICENSING LAW.

— » ANOTHER OFFENDER FINED. [PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] INVERCARGILL, December 16. The first prosecution in Invercargill under the new Licensing Act, clause 42, which makes it an offence to be on licensed premises after the closing hour, took place to-day before Mr Riddell, 8.M., when an elderly man was charged with being on hotel premises after the closing time. He admitted the offence, but explained that he did not remain after ten o'clock for the purpose of obtaining drink, but in order to have conversation with a friend whom he had not seen for some time, and who was staying in the hotel. The police said there was no evidence that drinking had been going on or was about to take place. Defendant was fined 10s and costs 7s.
