m FINDING OF THE JURY. : [press association.] NELSON, December 16. I The enquiry regarding the college fire commenced to-day, ana a good deal of evidence was taken. An employee of the , painter admitted having used a fire pres- [ sure lamp. Evidence was also given that \ the contractor for the painting had agreed to remove old paint without the use of fire. , NELSON, December 16. At the enquiry into the College fire the jury returned the following verdict: "That in the opinion of the juay the fire "That in the opinion of the jury the fire Nelson Boys' College was caused by the use of fire for removing paint from the old building." The following riders were attached: (1) That in the opinion of the jury the organisation of the College wjis excellent; (2) that the means for extinguishing the fire were inadequate ; (3) that had there been a better pressure of water in all probability the building would have been saved: (4) that the headmaster and assistants did all in their power' to put the fire out; (6) that fire was used to remove paint without the knowledge or consent of either the College Governors or Mr E. T. Savage, the contractdr.
